Sam Snead, known as "Slammin' Sam", was said to have the sweetest swing in the game, won 81 PGA Tour events, 7 majors and many more tournaments around the world. Along with many memorable events, he shoot his age in an official PGA Tour event at the age of 67, and followed it two day later with a 66. Following my comments in last month's newsletter, I thank all those that sent me their comments. As I suspected, all but one, agreed - It should not be based on age BUT on current playing ability. A few replies: 'In this enlightened world, no person of average intelligence should have a problem understanding that age is a relative thing and should never be used as the soul criterior for exclusion. Winston Churchill was most powerful when he was of an age that most people were thinking retirement. There is no doubt, ability should be the major consideration, and don't forget about the mystic that "the great players' of the past bring to the major tournaments.' 'No - players should NOT be excluded because of AGE. Age is a state of mind. Players should have to play to an acceptable standard to be accepted.' 'In that I am 66 and just learning the game, I say age is NOT a factor.' 'No, players should NOT be excluded because of age. These guys have earned their place in the Masters. They and their families have made sacrifices and through their hard work, dedication and love of the game, they should be permanent members of the Masters Tournament. In fact the Masters should be HONORED to present these guys as "Masters of the game of golf." Thanks for the opportunity, because of my age, to air my grip.' 'Players should be admitted through form and not age, especially in the now where players take their fitness a lot more seriously, and in turn increase their longevity in the sport.' __________________________________________________________ *** COMPETITION WINNER Congratulations to the winner of our May competition. This month's winner is from Tokarahi Golf Club, Otago. And so began the journey; being a high achiever personality type I set a goal of reaching single figures within 2 years of play; it took me 26 months to graduate from my official handicap of 27 to 6.7 Needless to say I am hooked on the game. After hitting a solid tee shot I left myself with a slightly uphill 115 metre pitch to the green. I used a 9 iron; it felt good right from the time I hit it but I thought it might be a little short. To mine and my two playing partners amazement it went straight into the hole (all 'net') hitting the bottom of the flag. Extremely satisfying! Not only me first eagle but my lowest score to date." I received Kevin's response too late for last month's newsletter. Kevin recalls, "The eagle was on the short par 4 seventh hole, at Mahunga Golf Club, measuring just 270 metres. I hooked my tee shot and finished up by the back of the 5th green, in the rough. I was fortunate to have a clear shot through the trees to the green, with just a shortish tree on line but not really in play. I hit a pitching wedge over the tree and saw it land on the green, roll up to and then into the hole." And also another slow Kevin, who made his eagle in March. "North Shore par 5 481 metre 7th hole. Pulled the tee shot into short rough on the left of the fairway. Played a 2 iron 5 feet passed the hole and holed the putt." Kevin adds, "Thanks for providing the site. It still proves that my up and downs percentage is @$#%$#@!! (as if I didn't know, but now it stares me in the face)." Congratulations to all successful GoforGOLFers. (Our promise of confidentiality does not allow us to publish your names, without your permission). _________________________________________________________ *** JUNE COMPETITION This month the prize is a 15 ball pack of TopFlight Titanium TX Balls *** Answer these two questions to be in the draw *** TopFlight Titanium TX Golf Balls One Swedish Lady has made a hugh impression on the US Tour this year with 4 wins 2 seconds and a third, and 8 top tens in 9 starts. This weekend in the Kellogg-Keebler Classic held at the Stonebridge Country Club, Aurora, Illinois, she showed her true class, winning by xx shots. She lead the tournament throughout, letting her competitors only get as close as 3 shots, before pulling away on the last 9 with 7 birdies in 11 holes. Check out tour results in our Slice o' NEWS section http://www.goforgolf.com/sliceonews.asp Answer these two simple questions, a) Who won the 2002 Kellogg-Keebler Classic ? b) What was the winning margin ? TO ENTER - CLICK on the banner advert on the GoforGOLF website http://www.goforgolf.co.nz or go direct to the entry form at http://www.goforgolf.co.nz/contest.asp The winners will be drawn from the correct entries by the management of Sports Information Management Ltd. The results will be final. (and there is the usual the small print?) No correspondence or discussion will be entered into. __________________________________________________________ *** HandiTIPS 1. How to improve your game - Compete against yourself. Commence now to record your hole by hole scores. Once you have four or five scorecards entered for your home course, or one you play regularly, then print out your score analysis. From this, you will be able to see which holes you score well on, and those which you have difficulty with. Now identify two holes that you think are the easiest for you to improve on. If you always bogey them, then you think you can par them. During the next rounds try particularly to par these two. When you have beaten them, choose the next two holes and attack them. Once you have succeeded on a hole, you will find you can do it more consistently. It worked for me. 2.
