Thanks to the many who sent me details of the previous occassions: One from Tony McHale . . . Royal St. Georges has hosted the Open on 12 previous occasions, most recently being 1981 (winner Bill Rogers), 1985 (Sandy Lyle) and 1993 (Greg Norman). Royal Birkdale (8 Opens) and Royal Lytham & St. Annes (7+), both currently active venues, are also in England. Hoylake (Royal Liverpool, 10 times) will return to the Open rota in 2006, having last hosted the event for Roberto Di Vicenzo's victory in 1967. NB. Royal Portrush, in Northern Ireland (had to mention that), was the scene for the victory in 1951 of Max Faulkner (the last British winner until Tony Jacklin won in 1969 at Lytham & St. Annes - the Royal tag came later).
